However, in this ocean of movies, it is easy to overlook true gems – films that may not have become worldwide hits (although some from our list have gained considerable popularity), but definitely deserve attention. In this selection, you will find 10 touching, tender, slightly funny, and sometimes heartbreaking stories that may have escaped your notice. Magic in the Moonlight (2014)
Let's start with a little-known romantic drama by Woody Allen (at least not as famous as some of his other films), based on his own screenplay. As always, the cast is outstanding – the leading roles went to Colin Firth (“The King's Speech”) and Emma Stone (“Cruella”).
The late 1920s, the French Riviera. Famous illusionist Stanley Crawford, at the request of a friend, sets out to expose the medium Sophie Baker, who, according to him, is manipulating a wealthy family. Who better to take on this task than him – after all, he knows the mechanisms of human imagination perfectly. However, as Stanley gets to know Sophie better, the skeptical illusionist begins to question his own beliefs, and an unexpected feeling develops between them.
It Ends with Us (2024)
Lily Bloom grew up in a family with a tyrannical father. Her childhood was far from easy, but now she is an adult and has left many things behind. She moves to Boston to fulfill her dream – opening her own flower shop. There, she meets successful neurosurgeon Ryle, and a passionate romance begins between them. Their relationship seems perfect, but soon Lily's beloved begins to show anger and jealousy – just like her father once did. The situation becomes even more complicated when her first love, Atlas Corrigan, reappears in her life. Now Lily must make a difficult decision that will determine her future.
The romantic drama is based on Colleen Hoover’s 2016 novel. Despite some differences (for example, the characters in the film are slightly older than in the book), the author’s main message has been preserved. The film was directed by Justin Baldoni (“Five Feet Apart”), who also played the role of Ryle. The cast also includes Blake Lively (“The Age of Adaline”) and Brandon Sklenar (“1923”).
Words and Pictures (2013)
At the prestigious Croydon school, two extraordinary teachers work side by side. Jack Marcus is a charismatic and passionate English literature teacher, poet, and writer. Unfortunately, he has not created anything truly valuable for years and increasingly turns to alcohol. Dina Delsanto is a talented painter and a new art teacher whose illness makes it difficult for her to hold a brush. Between them, an unusual rivalry develops: what has greater power over people – words or images? By involving their students in this debate, they begin to discover their own inner conflicts and the feelings growing between them.
The film was directed by Australian filmmaker Fred Schepisi (“Roxanne”), and the main roles were played by Clive Owen (“Children of Men”) and Juliette Binoche (“Chocolat”). Interestingly, all the paintings created by Binoche’s character in the film were actually made by the actress herself – she is an art enthusiast who has even organized her own exhibitions.
The Notebook (2004)
You are about to discover a touching and beautiful story of lifelong love – a feeling that survived the test of time, separation, and life’s hardships. America, the 1940s. Noah and Allie – two young people from completely different worlds – meet when they are young and fall deeply in love. However, the interference of the girl’s parents separates them for many years. Despite this, fate brings them together again, and they try to revive the love that never truly disappeared.
There are many reasons to watch this film. First, it is a wonderful story inspired by real events described by Nicholas Sparks in his book. Second, the authentic and emotional performances of Ryan Gosling (“La La Land”) and Rachel McAdams (“Midnight in Paris”) make a huge impression. Third, it is a true cinema classic that simply cannot be missed. So add “The Notebook” to your watchlist and make sure to see it.
We Live in Time (2024)
Andrew Garfield continues to stay busy and keeps appearing in productions of various genres. One of his latest films is “We Live in Time”, where together with Florence Pugh (“Little Women”) he tells the story of a love that cannot be broken by any obstacles. The touching melodrama was directed by John Crowley, known for the adaptation of Donna Tartt’s novel “The Goldfinch” (2019).
The relationship between Tobias and Almut begins in a rather unusual way – the girl accidentally hits him with her car. This unexpected encounter completely changes their lives and turns into an intense romance. However, their happiness does not last long – Almut discovers that she has cancer. This painful diagnosis forces them to rethink everything and cherish every moment as if it were the most precious gift.
A Family Affair (2024)
If you want to spend a few hours in a positive atmosphere without deep tragedies, turn to Richard LaGravenese’s “A Family Affair”. Although this romantic comedy does not aim to be a great masterpiece of cinema, it definitely guarantees a good mood. And there is also an impressive cast – the leading roles are played by Nicole Kidman (“The Others”) and Zac Efron (“Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile”).
Kris Cole is a classic representative of the entertainment industry: egotistical, arrogant, and unpredictable. Zara has worked with him for several years, but she is tired of his behavior and wants to quit. However, there is one problem – she discovers that her widowed mother has started a romance with her “boss”. And this may cause quite a few complications...
La passion de Dodin Bouffant (2023)
France, 1885. Eugénie, a talented chef, works with Dodin Bouffant – a connoisseur who is passionately devoted to the art of gastronomy. This extraordinary pair of cooks has shared the same kitchen for 20 years and developed deep, tender feelings for each other. Dodin has repeatedly asked Eugénie to become his wife, but she has always refused. When her health begins to deteriorate, Dodin decides to act and prepares the most exquisite dinner he can create for her.
The film was directed by Tran Anh Hung, known for “Norwegian Wood”. The premiere took place at the Cannes Film Festival, where the director received the award for Best Director. The movie stars the incomparable Juliette Binoche, while her partner is played by Benoît Magimel (“The Piano Teacher”), who was previously in a relationship with Binoche. Chef Pierre Gagnaire, a holder of 14 Michelin stars, also worked on the set as a culinary consultant and appeared in a small role in the film.
Tulip Fever (2017)
Holland, the 17th century, at the height of tulip mania. Young beauty Sophia, raised in a convent, is forced to marry Cornelius, a wealthy but older merchant. Wanting to preserve his wife’s beauty in a portrait, Cornelius invites talented artist Jan to paint her. Passion sparks between Sophia and Jan, and they decide to risk everything for their love, becoming involved in dangerous adventures connected with the tulip trade.
The cast of the film is truly impressive: Dane DeHaan (“Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets”) appears alongside three Oscar winners — Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl”), Christoph Waltz (“Django Unchained”), and the charming Judi Dench (“Shakespeare in Love”). Interestingly, long before filming began, the main roles were offered to Keira Knightley and Jude Law. The film was directed by Justin Chadwick, known for “The Other Boleyn Girl”. Although critics received the movie rather coldly (while audiences often disagree with them), it is still worth watching, if only for the performances of Hollywood stars, as well as the stunning costumes and production design.
About Time (2013)
Richard Curtis, the creator of “Love Actually” and screenwriter of the first “Bridget Jones” films, carried the idea for this project in his mind for a long time and eventually wrote the screenplay himself. When everything finally came together, the result was “About Time”, a film that has become almost a classic of 2010s romantic comedies. To bring his vision to life, Curtis invited Domhnall Gleeson (“Ex Machina”) and Rachel McAdams (“The Notebook”) to play the leading roles. Interestingly, McAdams had previously appeared in “The Time Traveler’s Wife”, where she also played the love interest of a man with the ability to travel through time.
At first glance, Tim Lake seems like an ordinary guy. However, on his 21st birthday, he learns from his father that the men in their family have the ability to travel through time. Inspired by this gift, Tim decides to use it to find the love of his life. When he meets Mary, he uses his “time jumps” to create the perfect circumstances for their relationship. But soon Tim realizes that even with the ability to travel through time, life is full of unpredictable events, and some things simply cannot be changed.
One Day (2011)
Emma and Dexter meet on the day of their university graduation – July 15, 1988. After spending the night together, they decide to… become friends. They continue their lives on separate paths, but every year, on the same day, they unexpectedly meet again. Year after year. So is it really just a coincidence, or perhaps something more – destiny?
The film is based on the novel of the same name by David Nicholls, who, besides being a writer and actor, also wrote the screenplay for the movie. Directed by Lone Scherfig (“An Education”), the film stars Anne Hathaway (“The Devil Wears Prada”) and Jim Sturgess (“Cloud Atlas”). Interestingly, the movie became so iconic that in 2024 Netflix created a series adaptation based on it.
